Bournemouth prior to posting to No. 107 Squadron, Great Massingham, Norfolk, on the 1st April, and later on the 12th April to No. 487 (NZ) Squadron, Methwold, Norfolk for operational flying on Ventura and Mosquito aircraft. This unit was subsequently transferred to Sculthorpe, Norfolk, on the 22nd July. Pilot Officer Muir took part in four operational flights from this base, including raids on Caen and Cherbourg in France.

On the 4th December, 1943, Pilot Officer Muir was the Navigator of a Mosquito aircraft which took off on operations to attack rail and transport targets in Western Germany, and failed to return to its base. All the crew, including Pilot Officer Muir were classified as missing. In due course his death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 4th December, 1943.

A post war casualty search revealed that no subsequent information had been received concerning the aircraft or members of the crew and in view of the fact that it was last seen off the Dutch Coast, it has been assumed that the aircraft crashed at sea, all members of the crew, including Pilot Officer Muir losing their lives at sea without trace.
