1869 Oct 13 Lee Dean & Cornelius left yesterday after Dinner began to rain about night firing 2 Houses Tobacco now Lowry at old prize barn & Richard & Doron at 1 back of - Garden my Hogs nearly all up this morning I went to Mount Airy yesterday ___ & to Mrs Colemans & old place to day 14. very cool last night & frost bit Tobacco a little Some places worse than others, below new prize Barn Tobacco bit very little, we are Cutting all to day hired Sam Mattherly & Tom [Lane] Cold,- to day finished & covered it up 15th. Halling up Tobacco & Housing in fresh ground Barn Hanging began to Rain about [10?] or 11 oclock to day & Rained more or less till night, very cold rain have not got wood enough to finish the 2 Barns firing good John D Hunts Estate [give] Doct Estes an order to old place for 400 hard bricks, rained till near night & cleared off 16th Cleared off last night Plowing away & filling Tobacco House at Waterloo got it full getting wood & halling & firing barn back of Garden quite cool to day altered 3 Shoats Turned out 1 Boar Shoat & cut my old Boar Lowry cut & marked them all but 2 that got out of the Pen this morning very cool 17th clear & cool this Sunday morning Frosty I expect to Start to Court after awhile went 18th I went & give up Mr to the Court & they court appointed my Son [Jere] H Graves [Ad??] with the will [anne???] of J D Hunt [Danl 19th I went to old place Finished hanging Tobacco filled up new [covered] Barn in corn field put 700 [& upwards] Sticks in it & 200 & [odd] in Richds little Barn & [run] the first close together, Richard firing his Big Barn -- 20th 21st 22nd & 23rd I have been to Lynchg Sold wheat & went to Halling Institute with M A. Hunt Started up there 1/2 past 5 in evening & that night Friday

24nd Went to Halling & back down to Lynchg by 8 or 9 oclock Started home by 10 [ten] oclock rained nearly the whole time while I was gone Carried Alice [Safty] there got to Jerrys Saturday night went to Kates Sunday morning come home about night Sunday cleared off Saturday night 25 I went to Meeting to meeting Strait Stone. Our folks has been firing Tobacco got Some wood, old Mr James Brown here while I was gone & Tom Brown Son of Danl Brown Helped Mr Lewis thrash wheat last friday &C &C my wife went to Meeting yesterday & Doron 26th I went to Meeting Mr Lacy not there MrPlunk et carried on the meeting - our folks Sewing Halling up corn very cool about this time Put up 5 Shoats & 3 Hogs [to fatten] Killed 1 mutton to day 27 Sewed Lot wheat & finished last night 28th I am going to meeting very cool fixing to Sew Tobacco Land above where we had wheat Mrs Drusilla Whitehead here & Puss her daughter Sewing that pt with toll wheat come from [????] J H Did not rain last night moderate weather Tobacco land above where we had wheat 1869 29th Sewing p? & will finish to day above where where we had wheat this year 1869 30th Pulling of corn no plowing to day, I went with waggon Steers & mule after my Guano at old place, & Plank at Cedar Hill, &C &C -- 31st went to Meeting Mr Brown Preached good day Kate went from here this morning for the last 2 months some body has been here Novr 1st Plowing for wheat shucking corn & finished this night Doron Plowing -- I went to Mount Airy with Wm [??????] Novr 1st Plowing up corn Land for wheat Shucking corn & Pulling of stalks &C 2nd [Sawing] Baughs Raw Bone Phosphate & wheat & Bushing it in [measured] up 2 Bbls to me 1 1/2 Bbls & 2 Baskets to Richard got up [9] Hogs in Big pen & 3 at Houses making 12 in all 3. Sewed fresh ground wheat 6 Bushel there 2 Bags Baughs Raw Bone Phosphate, & the last in Peruvian making 14 Bushels Sewed in all plowing Richards fresh ground for wheat

1869 Novr 3rd Got up yearling to Kill in morning Hannah cutting down & Piling corn in mountain cut to Sew wheat, I want to Sew the Lancaster Red Wheat, very pretty weather now 4th I went to Yates Mill carried 1 Bbl 1 Bbl wheat & 1 Bbl [??????] for chop got it all & Brot back Joe Yates [toll] wheat [?] Bushels - Sewing wheat in Richards Fresh ground & Hanna is cutting & Piling corn at Mountain Spring cut for wheat [?]th Finished sewing Richards fresh ground Sewed 6 there I went to Yates Mill Doct Estes James East Sharpe Yates Saw Mrs Furbush for Fannie went to Wm Mc Haneys to See Jas [Cothran], he was not there then went to his house he was not there then to Harry Daltons & got the oil cloth I lost on Friday when I went to mill Come home Halled 3 Loads wood & some litewood &C &C -- quite cool & windy --- 7th Doron gone up to Banks for me [twice] Come back by post office Richard gone up to Jerrys to day very windy & cool --- my Moses nor my other Sow & Shoats has not been up for Sometime & Moses Sow has Pigs some where 7 Shoats only 2 yellow ones Comes up & 5 Big Shoats Killed one Beef weighed nearly 200lbs & sent hide to Starkeys Tan yard 8th Put away our Greens to day & Beets cutting down corn & Piling & fixing young steers Beaux & Yoke & expect to to hitch them up tomorrow morning very cool & windy to day (the balance of this page has been torn off)

1869 Novr 9th Hitched up my young steers they worked very & went on to Halling corn from Mountain Spring Cut & Halled it all to day ___ cloudy all day, I went to shop & old Place to day I owe Primas 50 cent for [??????] 2 axes 10 Halled up wood & went to MrMillers after 5 Barrels corn bot of Geo F Miller @ $5 pr Barrel John [?] Hart came here to See me pulling of corn, shelled corn old, all we had 11th Plowing up Mountain Spring cut for wheat, [clouday] & like for falling weather 12th Nearly done plowing for wheat put away & shucked out corn & put away shucks & Halling some wood 13th began to Snow this morning & snowed nearly all day making 3 little Snows to this day doing but little to day very cold & disagreeable 14th stayed at home all day quite cold & snow nearly gone did not Snow much -- 1 Sewed 1869 about 17 Bushels wheat - 15 Pulled corn on mountain Charles Plowing Richard [sewed] 2 Bus. Bowden & Balance on the upper part not quite enough to finish of the Lancaster red division between in my lot by old prize Barn the other Side of the drain [as] the Lancaster red from Shields's this Side is the blue Stem from Hodnetts up to division then the Bowdens over in the fresh ground is the Bowdens above where we had wheat last year & the fresh ground in corn field Sowed the Bowden wheat we made ourselves Sewing about 17 Bushels for me in all 1869 lacks 2 Bus of as I sewed 1869 (the balance of this page has been torn off)

1869 Nov 16 I went to Shop & old place they are halling up mountin field corn & got some wood in evening cloudy & Raining before I got home, 17th Cutting wood pulling corn &C - cleared off Halling up corn & wood, - still cloudy 18th John Keatts & Sam Roping cutting Logs at Mountain Spring for House I hired Sam Roper still cloudy & like for Snow 19 Sam Roper cutting Logs to day for Sallies Kitchen, still cloudy & like for snow pulling & Halling corn 20th Finished Halling up corn & Rained last night hard & nearly all night quite cool I went to Mrs Hunts place & then went Banks & Mount Airy this evening got nails for Cothran who is at work at Mrs Hunts place 21st Sunday stayed at home 22nd I went to Hiram Lains & divided corn & old [arons] fodder Brot about 4 Barrels corn good & 1 nubbins Some corn & fodder up there yet there will be in all about 6 Bbls corn 1 1/2 Bbl nubbins Shucks & Blade fodder & some Tobacco fodder to be divided & Tobacco 23 Raining this morning & we cant go to Cedar Hill after Shucks & corn & fodder we are not near done Shucking our own corn & what is Shucked is out at Stack --------- [???????] Weather moderate Sam Roper worked [he??] yesterday making 4 days in all I owe him for 24 Cleared off & we went to Cedar Hill brot home shucks & corn no fodder, they did not get done shucking corn at home 25 Housing & finished shucking made in all about nobody can [till] for we have been feeding ever since September but put in house to day Bbls 26th Putting up shucks to day -- 27 Halling & cutting wood rained some
