Q. 626 Mr. Sake: Are there not items, or is
there not an item, in that report purport=
=ing to state an expenditure of money in
procuring or influencing legislation?

Mr. Bergin: Our advice to the witness
is, to decline, under advice of counsel,
to answer any questions as to the contents
of those reports, except what he has
already submitted.

Q. 627 Mr. Cohen: Will you produce the
receipts and vouchers of the Contract and
Finance Company inquired for at yester=
day's examination?

A. [After examination:] I have seven
vouchers, for the year 1868. There are about
forty or fifty for the year 1869, or which
I have a list; and from that time on
there are several hundred. I will
read the contents of the eight vouchers
for the year 1868.

The first on [caret]No.977, is a receipt from the
Contract and Finance Company to the
Central Pacific Railroad Company
for cash on account, dated, Sacramento,
August 12, 1868, signed, "Contract and
Finance Company: W. E. Brown, Sec." The
amount receipted for it $70,687.50.
