The mexicans [Mexicans] fled but some could not
quite beat a bullet propelled by an american [American]
rifle. One was overtaken running with five
bullets holes through him another received a
shot in the shoulder and was captured
and hurt for fear he would not die
of his wound the remainder escaped
John sayes [say] the first ran like the wind until
his rifle cracked, after that the others had a
more time to take aim as he slacked his pac [pace]
John hooke [John Hooker] is in good health Silse's
health is yet rather poor I have not
for a long time heard from either D T Hoay
E Turner J Davis Sibley and I do not know
their whereabouts if you know write find
out where Ez is anyway if he has not
returned to the states I wrote some
time ago to Omar & Lib and am now
expecting an answer remember me
to them, tell not to wate [wait] for me to write
directly to them but write often, ditto all others
