[[Singapore]]

We did not touch at [[Singapore]] but lying so near
our track as it does, it may be described here.

It is a British Settlement on the Southern extremity of
the [[Malay Peninsula]], it is an Island with several smaller
ones lying east and west of it in what is called the
[[Straits of Singapore]], and lies in 1o. 8' and 1o 32' north
latitude and Longitude 105o. 30'. The thermometer ranges during
the year between 72o and 88o. The population is composed of
nearly all the nations of southern [[Asia]], but Europeans
are few, almost all nations resort to [[Singapore]] with
their production and take in return such good as they require
being a free port no export or import duties the
settlement is exceedingly flourishing, even there are no
anchorage, Harbour or light-house dues levied. The Chinese
junks resort there from all parts of [[China]] for trade.
The imports into [[Singapore]] from [[England]] are, iron, woolens
earthenware, copper, sheathing, nails, anchors, [illegible?], wines,
cutlery +c +c. Taking in return rice, china goods such as
[illegible?] +c +c.
