to bring about, representing it to be the outcome of the object's influence upon
it. I need not say that this influence is usually indirect and not of
the nature of a force. It is of the first importance in studies like
this that the two correlates that are essential to aa sign, its Object
and its Meaning, or, as I usually call it, its Interpretant, should be
clearly distinguished. The meaning may itself be a sign,
a concept for example. But everybody who looks out of his
eyes, and is not blinded by a metaphysical theory, well knows
that thoughts and observations may bring about great physical effects
that are not, as such, signs. During a battle an old [?] may
