therapeutics even to this day is more or less associated with magical rites. Perhaps the imitation-instinct is concerned in this phenomenon; for to be taken ill is a sudden, unexpected event which the man is unprepared to meet in any rational way. This makes him ready to imitate irrational methods, and the practice of these methods creates a faith in them.

The food-instinct has among all peoples in all stages of civilization been in alliance with the Conversation-instinct. People always want to eat and drink in company which promotes both appetites and digestion. They also care much more what they eat when they eat in company. There can be no doubt that these two instincts have reciprocally stimulated each the development of the other. The food-instinct has also been connected with the play-instinct. Men wish to make feasts fine things esthetically. If eating has done little for art, artistic feeling has done everything for gastronomy.
