The play-instinct, on the other hand, mingles more or less with every other instinct, with the health-instinct in stimulating exercise, with the food-instinct in making feasting a species of entertainment, with the clothes-instinct in making personal adornment esthetic, with the house-instinct in converting building into the art of architecture, with the collecting-instinct so far as works of art are a chief subject of collecting, with the imitation-instinct through the imitative arts, with the conversation instinct so far as literature is a fine art, with the war-instinct in military parade, with the magic-instinct so far as rites are made esthetically impressive and beautiful, with the progeny-instinct so far as people play with children and other pets, with the morals-instinct so far as government has its pomp and also in the intimate connection between ethics and esthetics.
