generally, to bring one thought to bear upon another, to add to a doctrine, purpose, habit, or performance that which seems to belong to it, to fit into it, to be wanted to perfect it. This spirit has endless ramifications; as for example when the simulation of an emotion or other state of mind by gesture, attitude, etc. brings on the genuine state of mind itself.

By the Dress-instinct is meant the most naïve, the most sensual, the most personal blossoming of the soul, as it is exhibited in gamboling, in clothing, personal adornment, and the like. It hardly escapes pettiness, vanity, and pretension. Coats of arms, titles, pedantry, insolence, subtle impertinence, excessive ceremony, fashionablenss, are some of its manifestations.

By the Preach-instinct is meant that energetic instinct that makes men labor to impress others. Its highest manifestations are in the fine arts. The passions for teaching and for preaching are respectable enough. In disputatiousness it degenerates to a vice.
