A cloudy day. Rain this evening.
Jim and Ben worked around
here until after twelve.
They they went to the sale of
Jessie Hutchersons land.
Mr. Norman Booker carried
me with his family to the river at Mr. Jim
Bookers fish trap. They
had a fish fry. There
was some fifty or more
people there. The me
done the cooking. The
fish was fried as nice
as could be. We had
a good time. Some of
them had fried chicken
and some had ham and
cake and cream. We
all took a shower
of rain. The rain was
badly needed. Hope all
got home safe. I cooked
supper after I got
home.

I don't see any references in the notes to either the fish trap or fish fries. In the spring there are several species of salt water fish that ascend the rivers to spawn. These include the striped bass (rockfish), a couple types of shad, and a couple types of herring. Assuming that the fish could get past Roanoke Rapids, NC, one or more of these fish might have been able to make it that far up. There is an earlier reference to her going fishing and there being quite a few people out that day which suggest that something was running. Since they were feeding so many people, the fish must have been plentiful although it does look like some people brought a picnic but that might have been for family members who didn't like fish. For one thing, shad, although very flavorful, are extremely bony.
