Monday 15 arose at day break herd
that our troops had left about
three oclok in the morning there
retreat but(?) off by a strong force
of the enemy terible fighting I did
not See it but could hear them
very distinctly taken prisoner and
put into the fort with many others
over 2000 by evening one meal to
day Bread & butter no rations to
day men are like wolves sleep in a
tent put up for the officers

Tuesday 16 begged a little coffee formed(?)
two loaves of Bread divided with Bro
Ambler no rations men are getting
excited officers called out out ten o
clock marched to the Court House in
leaving the Prisoners 3 cheers for the
star and stripes and then for Abe
much more pleasant in the Court
house nothing to eat until 3 ock the (__)
woman handed us some in at the
window I prayed and sung with
the officers before (__) to
sleep
