MY DEAR FRIEND

I received your very kind letter,^{1Possibly Douglass’s letter to William Slade of 12 August 1867, appearing immediately before this one.} and I was sorry that you could not accept
the position, that I feel allmost certain that I could procure. Although I
have had no talk with the—President on the subject, But I have learned
though one of his Secretary<s>, (privately) that he would appoint a colored man, if he could find one suitable for the Place.—hence I wrote to
you and I hope—yet—you will give the Subject more Consideration, and
let me hear from you at your Earliest Convenience, I would like to see you
at the—head of that Bureau, hoping this will find you and family in good
health with my kind regards to Mrs Douglass—^{2Anna Murray Douglass.}
