as in the Hip, or that Part of the Condyle of Humero=
us which goes to the two lesser Fingers, which bservations occur
daily -- Some have supposed the residence of the Mind
to be in the Nerous System all over the Body. But this Doctrine
is liable to many objections: it is more probably in the
Brain which is called the common Sensory This pears probable from another phenomenon when the
lower parts are paralytic, the seat of the Mind is not affected
besides if the Nerve that goes to any part be cut thro' or the whole
Part be cut off, the like sensations shall be felt for a time as
before as sometimes happens after the Loss of a Limb--
3d. also if the Brain or spinal Marrow be destroyed to a certain
Degree, the Nerves from thence arising will be incapable of
performing their office. Persons may lose considerable parts
of the Brain & yet live after it but if we destroy the origin of any Nerve going
to any vital principal Part, we put an end to life instantly.
Hence the reason of that running an awl or any thing of that
kind into the spinal Marrow very near the Head occasions [Death]
sudden Death -- 4.th As the Destruction of Nerves occasions
Palsies &tc so Irritation of them occasions Convulsions,
An arm or any other part is said to be liable to two kinds of
Palsy besides loss of Motion & Sensation together. Motion may
be lost & Sensation remain distinct & vice versa. If that really
is the case, it seems to prove that there are one set of Nerves
