An Indian of the Quiquaboc nation having been instructed by
a French Priest at Massiac, in the Romish religion, was seen
by Mr. R. kneeling before a crucifix and muttering his prayers -

Mr. R. commended him for his devotion and asked him some
questions, sending to find what progress he had made -

The Indian told him he had been instructed to pay his
adoration to the Master of life, who would grant him all
his petitions, after which he asked Mr. R. for sixteen bottles
of rum, and being in a very gentle manner given to
understand his request could not be complyed with, the
Indian immediatley cut off a small silver crucifix which
he wore about his neck, and flung it away, saying that
that the Priest had deceived him, for he had been praying to
God for sixteen bottles of Rum and expected to have got
them from Mr. R.

Massiac was formerly a french Fort and post on the {North West} side
of the Ohio, about 12 leagues above its conflux with the
Mississippi -
