Dear Mrs. Stanford;

May I trespass upon your time a few moments to let you know that our hearts here are sorrowing with you in the sudden taking away of your beloved husband and life companion. We shall all miss him, more than we can express, though of late years, his field of [action] has been so removed from

our midst, yet the fond remembrance of his genial kindly smile, will ever be a sweet solace to us who knew him personally. I know you will not be one who mourns without hope, for his life was a beneficence to all mankind, an active, practical Christian. And what a beautiful, happy reunion between father and son!! One more added tie above, to lead your thoughts and aspirations upward! May I send you a sweet little Poem upon

Dying? It was written by a sweet little friend, who had been called upon to give up first her child and then her husband within a short space of time and who herself was then dying of consumption. Dear Mrs. Stanford,

We who have experienced the kindnes of Gov. Stanford and yourself can sincerely sympathize with you in your affliction, as do all the citizens of Sacramento, many of whom are bound to you by ties of gratitude.

Your loss is our loss: yet will the work so nobly begun, go on through the ages and make the names of our benefactors immortal.

Dying

I swing in the Christ-held hammock of prayer Fastened above the eternal stars; Each shining mesh, so firm and fair Hung on the promises glittering bars.

The sweetness of Heaven and earth combine In glorifying this bed of mine Hearts loving and saintly have twisted each corner And fastened the ends with the gems of His { ?}.

And the loving Jesus, pure and sweet Has gathered the strands that were laid at his feet, And bears up my hammock of prayer.

So I, quiet lie Neath the kind Fathers eye, Biding my hour to be called on high From my Christ-hung hammock of prayer.
