LELAND STANFORD JUNIOR UNIVERSITY

Palo Alto, Santa Clara Co., Cal.

Oct. 21. 1891.

Mrs. Leland Stanford.

Dear Madam:

It becomes more evident every day that we need at Roble hall two industrious maids in the dining-room. Some students assist there but their help is not sufficient. The first dining-room maid who came, remained only twenty-four hours not being [?] to overwork. Maggie Campion will leave on Saturday next if she does not have assistance. making two weeks of service. She is not a trained waitress, but she is quiet and willing. The steward Otto Wellweber agrees with me that we must have more help

-Ans-

My dear Mrs. Stanford: I take the liberty of congratulating you on the confirmation of your right to the full enjoyment of Mr. Stanford's estate by the Supreme Court of the United States. If you could have heard the expressions of men in the clubs, at the theaters and elsewhere you would have realized the friendliness of the people and would have been cheered on in your noble effort.

Yours very sincerely,

Mrs Stanford

My dear Friend

Your letter tells the story of a stricken, bereaved heart bravely putting away its own sorrows and tears, actively engaged in loving ministrations to others.

Your greatest peace and satisfaction will come from the realization that there is no separation; that you are more closely than ever before, united with your dear ones. It is like three souls in one body working to carry out those grand plans for the bettering of their fellows, for the uplifting of humanity.

Think of the enthusiasm and energy of that bright, loving mind

that has never lasted of the sorrows of earth, now infused into your heart and brain; tempered by the matured judgment of one who has passed through so many experiences, all united with your own in carrying on and perfecting a work of the greatest magnitude.

When the sense life is stilled in slumber, then you are consciously with your loved ones, then you realize fully that there is no death. The worlds that have been called two, are one and the seeming curtain that hides it from our consciousness is our own doubt and fears. Cheerfulness is the sunlight that dispels the mist and drives away the fogs that envelop us when we sit in
