A large proportion of the students in the different classes having recently requested the Faculty to state their opinion of the meaning of certain Sections 11 and 12 of Chapter 8 of College Laws I am directed by vote of that said Faculty to make the following statement :

The sections of the Laws referred to are the following :

(Read here Sections 11 and 12 of Chapter 8 College Laws)

These laws the Faculty understand in their literal and most obvious sense : nor will any explanation which they can make render them more intelligible. They obviously prohibit every student who has not a special permission from introducing into College either personally or by proxy every species of ardent Spirit and wine and from giving any [treat?] of the same substances to his fellow students on account of or under color of any appointment. As obviously each student is here forbidden to prepare or to aid in preparing or to be present at any festival or convivial entertainment in College or in the town. *[see note below] What constitutes a festival and convivial entertainment the Faculty [concurs?] is left for them to decide in each particular case. And although it may not be necessary they the Faculty take this opportunity to say that they feel it to be their duty and it is their deliberate purpose to carry into execution these sections of the College laws in every case where a violation of them comes to their knowledge.

*[note] And though it might not be easy to define beforehand and in general terms what constitutes a festival or convivial entertainment yet it will be very easy in any given case to know whether the spirit and intention of this article are violated.
