By the Health-instinct is meant the spring of all that action whose direct quasi-purpose is the general well-being of oneself, in mind and more particularly in person, prompting one to cleanliness and attention to hygiene, as well as to therapeutic measures in sickness.

By the Food-instinct is meant the impulses which conduce to agreeable eating and drinking, and to all sensual pleasures, such as smoking, etc.

By the Grab-instinct is meant the instinct that causes men to amass treasures and to engage in business, or the energetic pursuit of self-interest.

By the House-instinct is meant the source of that higher and more rational form of instinctive suiculture, that, beginning with home and fireside, next wants a library and intellectual pleasures, and leads up to fine furniture and to architecture, while falling short of Art in consequence of being centred in self.
