With Book IV the Republic is orginally designed was complete. Book I shows that there is a great virtue righteousness. Books VIII and IX examine the different kinds of governments and shows that their vices correspond to the vices of men. Books II III IV pursue the analogy and show how the virtues of states are the virtues of men and what righteousness is. Book X shows how this leads to the conception of the soul which would make it immortal and what the future life maybe imagined to be. There is a unity here. But the composition had extended through ten years during which the advance of Plato's thought had been great. Is is not certain that Books VIII and IX had originally been intended to preceded Books II III IV but such is Plato's usual method and such is the order in which the indicators are that which the compostion took place. I think we must place the culmination of Plato's powers as the Phaedo and Books VIII IX and II III IV of the
