James Wallace a mulattoe served me for five years, during which time he gave me satisfaction by behaving in a becoming manner in his station, So far as I know his honesty was never impeached nor have I ever heard of his behaving otherways than orderly & soberly since he left my service Jno Graham

Notice I shall petition the Hustings Ct of the City of Richmond on the first day of the June term 1817 for leave to reside in the sd city Jas Hill a free man of color 9th May 1817

I certify that I have known the bearer, James Hill for some time and believe him to be an honest and industrious Boy, those persons with whom he has lived from year to year have all agreed in giving him a very high character for industry, sobriety and honesty-.
