[1889] Sag Harbor 28th Aug Dear. M. Bowen Thanks for Mr. Whiting's review I had a letter from him yesterday, but he did not send me the article We were so greedy about finding Out of Doors in the Independent that we did not think of looking for further glorification for the Stoddard family - I have just found the notice and agree with the writer that Two Men must be read slowly, to give time for the mist of the author's mind to clear off, and for the intelligence of the reader

to fill up the 'analytic gaps' - then perhaps my truth and meaning will be discovered. I shall not send regards to anybody who prevents you settling down in the level fields of matrimony - expectation, romance, sentiment etc are very beautiful for a period, but human nature like Oliver Twist is asking for more - Yours truly Elizabeth Stoddard
