Sir,
Your favour of the 20th ultimo was duly received. I have not answered it before, because I have been trying to persuade myself that I should find time to prepare the poem so politely requested by my respected "Brother". I must no longer, however, delay my reply, and as the chance of my having the honour to come among you would be quite uncertain, I must respectfully decline the invitation which, under other circumstances, I should be proud to accept.

In another Sprague letter, transcribed as part of the exhibition at the Boston Public Library and
Massachusetts Historical Society on March 28–July 30, 2012, the same sentence structure is followed. There he uses the word "ultimo" immediately after a date; for that time period, the word meant "the month before." In both letters, the word is difficult to decipher, but context leads to "ultimo" as the correct transcription. - Jon Parrish Peede
