literary work aside from assisting Mr. Howells in the edidting of the Atlantic, - namely, the completion of a biographical & critical essay on Hawthorne (my father-in-law), who is to appear at an early date. I don't know whether you will feel enough interest in this to introduce it to your customers, though it would be pleasant to me to know that I was winning an audience in the West. The book is to be published by J. R. Osgood & Co. Boston. By the way, do you know Ellery Channing's Life of Thoreau? It is published by Roberts Bros. & has at least the merit of an ardent liking for the subject on the writer's past. Very truly yours G P Lathrop
