of the stock on the road. As thee wished to no the duties of my station will say that those of an assistant-wagonmaster are simply to help to take care of the train &c. I wasn't hardly in the business at all before I was given my present position, the [underline]rank[/underline] & pay is the same as before, $45.00 per mo, believe I wrote in my last all about my present business, [Mile's?] family is or was out last account well except [Abbie?] who was quite sick with the measles. Dear Mother,

Again I take pen in hand to write thee. I received thine of the 7th 12 days from date.

Was pleasantly surprised, astonished, sad, sorrowful, & various other things, at its perusal, pleased to hear of the health & prosperity attending you at home, or all but sis Mary, whose feeble health, is, to me cause for much anxiety, sorrowful to learn of the deaths of so many of my acquaintances & associates, [underline]surprised]/underline] at. - - [at?] well[!?] that [Thos?]

had been manufacturing a new sister for me, I think you have been very still about the matter, should [we?] expect anything more of T. himself, as he is rather of the quiet order. Think thee left the subject to soon, wished thee had told me more of her, how well thee was or is pleased or displeased [underline]if[/underline] either, how you are to get along together ([ie?]) does she relieve thee of much of the great care of the household & dairying affairs, which have seemed to me of late to be to much for thee, [deleted]while[/deleted] well! if the pleases write all about the affair. I am [underline]very[/underline] well weigh about 190 lbs. have been gaining nearly ever since I started for Mexico. The horses we took out were to be put in varous branches of [M.S.?] services, some at Ft. [N?] some at Santa Fee, some at Denver, the mules & wagons were to be used for transportation from [Miss-?] [ion?] South &c, &c. All the men who were willing to stay out there were employed at [underline]good[/underline] wages the rest came back, only enough men went out to [?]
