Assistant Quarter Master's Office, Head Quarters 2d Div., 6th Corps. Dumfries, Va.

June 15th 1863.

Dear Mother:

I must write only a few lines and I do not know when these will reach the Post office.

As thee will see by the above, we are once more on the move, and [underline]not[/underline], towards Richmond too.

We left the Camp, from which I sent my last, on Seventh day, to come as far as Straffod C.H. arriving there and going into Park, at about ten o'clock P.M. The Troops followed the trains, that day as far as Brook's Station. First morning at 2 1/4 o'- clock A.M. we had orders to "feed & Harness" and at 3 1/2 o'-clock A.M. we were on the road to Dumfries, 13 miles from Stafford C.H. and we Parked here, at about four, P.M. yesterday, tired dusty and lame, as I wish to be; after all, no one

need complain, and I think no one does. Lieut. Hatch and I had charge of all the teams of the Div. about one hund. twenty; no [underline]small[/underline] train, though [underline]I[/underline] did not have [underline]much[/underline] to do with it.

The teams of the Div. except the Supply Train, which stays to issue rations to the Troops, which are still behind and will be here, most likely, about noon, when we are to follow the Train to Fairfax Station. Falmouth, Aquia and Belle Plain are evacuated, the seige of F.'burg across the Rappahannock is abandoned; why, no one seems to know. The next you hear from me, I may be in Hagarstown, Md.

My Horse, which is one of the best riding animals in the Div. has become as blind as a mole and is really unservicable, so my spirits are at low tide to-day.

Nothing has made me feel so down hearted for a long time. I have a new horse now, and expect a hard

time to-day in breaking him to the saddle and bit. I will write again whe I have a good opportunity. If you do not hear from me, do not be afraid, for my safety. I have some writing to do, so no more now.

Love to all, as ever
