[printed:] The U.S. Christian Commission sends this as the soldier's messenger to his home. Let it hasten to those who wait for tidings.

"Fight the good fight of Faith."

[written:] Port Royal. May 31st 1864

My dear Mother:

I steal a few moments from the fatigue of the road to inform you of my present position. We left Annapolis on last Fifth, staid at Washington overnight at Alexandria, one, on the Transport, two, arriving at this Port. last evening. We are to march from here to the Front, fifty-five miles, it is said. I anticipate some fatigue but feel very strong, for it: have not felt better since leaving Richmond.

It will take, at least five days, to get through, perhaps [underline]more[/underline], so I can not tell you where to direct yet. I did not hear from home, since leaving there, but hope for good news when it does come.

In haste; with love

W. B. Stevens

To Mother
