The summer has been uncommonly warm. Therr. [THERMOMETER] has ranged for many days from 80 to 90 degrees. The weather of late has been very dry most of the time a bright sun & very hot - so that vegetation nearly ceased growing.

9th 9 mo Jonathan Prescott Engineer & two assistants are now here employed by the authority of the General Government to make a survey of the bar & harbour [HARBOR] of this place to ascertain the practicality of deepening the water by digging. A special town meeting this evening met for the purpose of appointing a committee to wait on & assist Prescott in making the survey. The committee appointed were Daniel Jones, Matthew Crosby, Barzilla Cottle, Gorham Coffin, David Worth, Samuel B. Tuck, Barker Burnall & Peter Chase.

see page 5- The dredging machine is daily expected from New York when, according to the contracting parties 1300$ must be paid on the delivery. This will be a hard thing in the first instance. But it is now confidently expected that the government will conduct the digging & bear the expence [EXPENSE], which if it is brought about, the result will be greatly to the benefit of this place.
