POLK Letters: May 18, 1857

1857, May 18

Bishop Polk, New Orleans, La., to Bishop Elliott, re: Bishop Elliott's illness and
his inability to attend his Convention, wishing to hear if there was any action
taken at the Convention with regard to the estabishment of a University;
reporting of endorsements of other conventions and their elections of trustee's;
his plan to leave the first of June to go to the Tennessee Mountain regions for
the purpose of looking for the most suitable site for the University in advance
of the meeting on Lookout Mountain on the 4th of July, asking him to make an
effort to be with Bishop Otey and himself; asking him further to call a special
Convention for the purpose of getting the endorsement of his diocese; friendly
remarks about their families. 8 pp.
