Seattle Wash Jany 13th 1891
To The Hon Mayor & City Council
Gentlemen,
We the undersigned your petitioners being engaged in the wholesale and retail fruit and vegetable business in this city respectfully ask your honorable body to take immediate action in reference to street peddlers. As the matter now stands the retail fruit dealers cannot compete with the fruit street vendors for the reason that street vendors have very little expense. They move from one corner to another selecting the most frequented thoroughfares, they pay no rent, their license is nominal, and experience demonstrates that they can call at a profit which to the retailer would be runinous. We believe it is the policy for the city government to guard and protect the interests of all legitimate businesses that contribute to the

support of our city by paying taxes and rents. Therefore we ask your honorbale body to license street vendors of fruit and vegetables - excepting of the local farmer who disposes of his own product at a rate of $75.00 per month. This will only put them on a footing with the retail dealers and equalize matters, giving each a chance to pay his necessary expenses and live x Haley Glenn Co H.R.
