TO THE HONORABLE BOARD OF ALDERMEN AND HOUSE OF DELEGATES
OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE, GREETING:

We, the undersigned Street Railway Companies, owning and oper-
ating street railways in the city of Seattle, respectfully repre-
sent that

WHEREAS it has been found upon actual experiment in this city
that it is impracticable to light the streets as contemplated in
the ordinances under which we operate our street railways, by
lighting from the trolley wire, and whereas the cost of an independ-
ent system for such purpose would add a great additional expense
burden in the matter of operating and maintaining our respective
street railways, which at the present time we are unable to bear,
and whereas in order to conform to the terms of our respective
ordinances it will be necessary for us to make a great outlay of
money for paving our road beds, and whereas it will be necessary
for us to make further extensions of our respective lines in order
to keep pace with the growth of the city, we feel that we are just-
ified in asking your Honorable Body to repeal the provisions of
our respective ordinances relating to the lighting of streets.

We, therefore, respectfully petition your Honorable Body that you
repeal the sections of our respective ordinances which require us
to light the streets, and your petitioners will ever pray.
