the consummation of the will of the people as indicted on the 4th, of November last. The papers indicate that Judge Carpenter of Los Angeles made a very pungent speech in reply to the insinuations made by Democrats on the floor of the Senate when placing White in nomination. I should like to have heard his speech, and hope to be able to read it in full.

I was very much interested in reading Senator Stanfods remarks upon his bill in the Senate recently, and regard it as the best sustained presentation of a subject, from the opening sentence to the conclusion, that I have ever read.. To my mind his Land Bill has passed beyond the realm of ridicule. Nor can it very much longer be ignored by the Senate. It must soon be faced upon its merits, and it is quite time for those who have arguments against it to begin to formulate them.

For the past week we have been having dry weather and cold frosty nights. The weather moderated last evening and the indications for rain today are favorable. The information concerning Senator Hearst as to his ultimate recovery is very unfavorable, and we expect to hear of his death at any hour. On Monday a rumor was generally circulated that he was dead; indeed the flag on the Capitol was already at half mast and the Senate adjourned. The question of a successor occupies the attention of several gentlemen and their friends to a considerable degree in and about Sacramento.
