Dear Sister:-
enclosed herewith please find copy of letter addressed to Mr. I.W.Hellman, Jr., Cashier, & Secty., of the Union Trust Co. of San Francisco, requesting him to have their New York Correspondent place to your credit upon the books of Speyer & Co., the sum of $100,112.82. This will make your account good, regarding the $100,000. worth of bonds purchased as per your verbal order before leaving New York, and as per statement which I now have before me.
After looking at the Balance to your credit in the Bank of California, after checks issued by yourself while in New York, have been paid, I notice a balance of $86,951.09. This would not have been sufficient to reimburse the University General Account the sum of $20,000. which has been deposited to your credit in the Bank of Califronia, making a total to your credit in that bank of $106,951.09. I then drew a check on the Bank of California for the sum of $100,112.82 and deposited this to the University General Acct. in the Union Trust Co. At this writing there is to your credit in the Bank of California the sum of $6,838.27. I thought it best to leave some balance to your credit, as you might wish to use some funds before interest would be received to return the loan of the $20,000.
Will you kindly sign the enclosed not for $20,000, payable three months after date with interest at 5% per year, to the order the Trustee of the Leland Stanford junior University.
