12 -- Found all right -- Took breakfast -- children & wife went with me to same train,

Round trip to Reno A family trip rain big rain A Walk around Carson

and at 1:50 PM wife & I & Alfie left on it & the other children went home feeling very sad because my visit was so short -- Wife only went with me for a ride -- The morning was pleasant, but sky clouded toward noon, and in PM as we came across Washoe valley, rain began to sprinkle -- Stopped an hour & 15 minutes in Carson -- Walked about town passing up street south of [???] to next street and along it & down the street past Cap Avery's Hole in the Wall saloon to front gate of Capital square -- It was beginning to rain so hard that she & I & Alfie had to hurry to depot -- got in the car, and ate some of the best cherries I ever saw, 2 bits worth, which I bought at a fruit stand -- Left on time, with 6 carloads of wood -- raining lively -- On up grade after leaving bed of Carson river the wet slippery track &

Wet slippery Railroading Big Rain

heavy load made us go slow & even quite stop at times & got to Mound House a few minutes behind time -- The regular express mail & passenger train which leaves Va at 5:25 here met us, also the incoming C & E train -- Transfer of passengers, etc took place between the three trains, Wife & Alfie getting abroad & leaving on return to Reno -- Stopped about 15 minutes -- still raining -- our train had hard pulling & slipping all way to Va, stopping 10 minutes at Gold Hill -- Through to Va at 7:45 or 45 minutes behind time -- A lively & pleasant days trip for me, and wife & Alfie

enjoyed their part of it much -- Rained hard from Mound House to Va, & we found it had been raining very hard at Va since 4 PM -- Big streams flowed down cross streets,

1st rain since middle of April

& everywhere & water stood in big puddles -- only sprinkling a little when I arrived -- Went to room -- Took a little lunch, there -- Was about town short time -- till 9:30 -- room, wrote part of a letter to wife -- got sleepy -- laid on bed & slept 2 hours, till 12:30 -- rose -- wrote more to wife, & in ths journal & went to bed at 2 -- Been [more?] or cloudy & sprinkling all the evening & heavily clouded when I went to bed at 2 -- This is 1st rain since middle of April, when it was snowing or raining a little at times --

Monday May 31

AM clear, PM cloudy, & evening a few light showers of rain -- Fine day for Memorial Day services -- Rose at 9 -- was about town -- Flags all at full mast -- Procession of military, G.A.R & Mex Vets & citizens in carriages -- Had a spat or two with

Memorial Day

drunken fellows, the mines laying off today -- Attended & reported services at Opera House -- Bed at 3:00 --
