Clear & hot -- 85 (degrees) -- Rose at 6 -- light breakfast -- Cal train hour late -- So nearly every day now, by reason of the Grand Army & excursion rate folks getting back from San F -- We left reno at 8:20 -- reached Va at 10:50 -- PM was up to the Savage office short time to see Keating -- Didn't see him as he is in San F now -- Work as usual -- Evening was at Opera House short time & saw about half the play of the "Golden Giant" by McKee Rankin & Cal Theater Co -- Very good $2:32* house though -- Bed at 3 -- tired --

Fire -- Norcross woodshed Wife in Va Centennial Assessed

Tuesday Aug 17 Same -- as usual -- Bed 2:30 --

Wednesday Aug 18 Same -- Bed 2:30

Thursday Aug 19 Same -- fire alarm at 10:30 AM -- Wood shed in rear of Hale & Norcross office & residence on E st -- Fire Dept on hand -- but those from Crosby's warehouse near by put it oput -- I went to the scene -- Work as usual -- Bed at 2:30 --

Friday Aug 20 Same -- Mining day -- Quit early -- Bed 2

Saturday Aug 21 Same -- Wife came on evening train -- Bill James. Harry Gorham & myself met this PM

as Board of Centennial trustees & levied asst of 2 cts a share -- Bed at 2--

Wife & I at Dayton -- Whittier Dredge

Sunday Aug 22

Same -- Wife & I took light breakfast at room, & morning train at 7:20 -- Got off at Empire & in a few minutes up train took us back to M.H. There we got aboard C & C train for Dayton where I was engaged to witness working model of Whittier dredge, in river, for raising quicksilver, emalgam, etc -- Dr J H Rae toe owner & Prest of the Co took us in tow as his guests -- Paid all traveling expenses -- took us to his house, where his wife is & I left mary there & we went over & saw the dredge work in the river about 100 yds from the RR depot -- dined with Dr & wife & son, et al, at Union Hotel -- other parties came from Va, to see dredge. Sol & Louis Frankel (brothers) (T E Fielding) and Matt Riderofthe Con Va assay office, &

Wife returns to Reno Whittier Dredge Poll tax Paid 80 deg

others -- PM very windy & dusty -- fearfully so -- Hadn't been in Dayton for 12 yrs -- PM was at dredge a few times more, seeing, it work for other parties to see -- Left on return at 5 PM -- on train from south -- seats all full -- at Mound House wife took train for reno & I for Va, both trains meeting & passing there - Va at 7, tired & chilly -- Room -- wrote a little -- got sleepy -- Laid down on bed at 8:30 & slept till 11 -- went down town short time - Bed at 1:30 --

Clear & pleasant -- weather about 80 deg nowadays -- Got my sleep well up -- Got in

my dredge visit for people in morning -- makes over a column -- Bed 3 -- paid poll tax, $4 today --

"Wizard Oil" -- Concert troupe -- New collars

Tuesday Aug 24

Same -- As usual -- Evening I was at Opera House awhile & heard most of concert of the Wizard Oil company -- Half a dozen of them, including Mrs Harry Christie, a strong clear soprano, who did the piano. Fine quartette -- Sang all sorts of songs, sentimental, comic, and otherwise -- Irish, Dutch, Jubilee songs, etc -- Had big house, at 4 bits admission -- although they have been singing free concerts every evening for a week from their wagon on the street -- Bed at 3:30

Wednesday Aug 25

Same -- got 1/2 doz new collars $1 -- Bed 4 --

Thursday Aug 26

Same -- rose at 9 -- shaved, etc -- Was at train at 10 to meet wife, but train late-

Wife in Va -- Fire on Divide -- Yourin's house 86 deg -- 10 hours sleep -- Hot 86 deg --

Arrived at 11:45 & she also -- Took breakfast at Chaumond's together & went to room -- We visited together during PM & at 3:25 PM she left for Reno -- Saw her off -- At nearly 12 tonight big fire alarm -- ran to it -- John Yourin's dwelling on the Divide just south of Washington House caught in cow shed near by -- house destroyed -- loss $3,000 -- Long walk out there & back -- Through in office at 2 -- Bed 3:30 --

Friday Aug 27

Same -- Mining day -- As usual -- Through in office earlier than usual -- Bed at 1:40 -- very tired --

Saturday Aug 28

Same -- 86 deg the last 2 or 3 days -- nights cooler -- Work as usual -- Bed at 2:30 -- Slept 10 hours last night

Hot -- 96 deg -- Millie's Sickness -- I in Reno -Shower -- Much cooler -- chollar

Sunday Aug 29

About as hot as any -- 90 deg in Va, and 96 in Reno -- Rose at 6, shaved etc, & at 7:20 left on train for Reno -- Got there at 11:30, found all right but Millie who is just able to crawl recovering from rheimatic fever -- Worn to a skeleton -- Is getting better -- Been sick a month -- PM staid at home -- too hot to do otherwise -- 96 in front porch shade -- Evening -- bed 9 --

Monday Aug 30

Cloudy & cooler -- Cal train for East delayed so I left at 7:40 for Va -- All right -- arrived at 10 -- on time -- Around as usual -- Bed at 3 -- A light shower about noon -- not enough to lay any dust --

Tuesday Aug 31

Clear & cooler -- A Lawson of Am Flat called, & we went out & took look at Chollar croppings ground -- Much cooler this PM & evening -- Bed 3 -- Almost frosty --
