Cloudy & cool -- PM about town -- Wrote & sent a letter to Jas O'Leary of SF Journal of Commerce, transfering to him fom Sperling the mining statistics job -- Evening at home -- wrote letter to Judge James Walsh San F, for early Comstock Ophir statistics, etc, Almarin B Paul, Middle Creek, Shasta Co Cal on same thing, & another short letter to J O'Leary -- Bed 1 -- Light sprinkles of rain this PM --

Clear & very pleasant -- warmer -- PM at Gold Hill -- wrote application of Jacob Wyckoff for $3,000 & placed it in hands of Dr Manson -- Dr Webber sick with pneumonia & whisky -- last 3 or 4 days, so he don't examine J McMartin -- walked home at 12 -- very tired --

Clear, warm pleasant -- Morning train at 11 AM brought the AR Wilber comedy co and a lot of delegates or members of the Grand Lodge, R.A.M. which convenes here today -- I met from Austin, CW Hinchcliffe, AD Vollmer, Wm Foster and Hopkins -- Also on insurance business found Dr Zangerle [$21.00?] & rode to Gold HIll on 'bus & found

Jake Wychoff [$29?] W's application for $3,000 received from Dr Manson, passed, all right & he paid the $29 -- I rode back with Col CC Thomas in his buggy -- was about town some with the Austin boys, & to bed at 1 --
Tuesday June 12
Same -- Took train at 7:20, got off at the [Oest?] mine, just below the RR tunnel below Am Flat -- Found Bill Naileigh was at Va -- Walked on to Silver City & visited about town till 2 PM when I rode up to Va with Ed Hamilton in his buggy -- Bill Naileigh passed down in Dayton stage, so I missed him like a dam -- Evening about town -- Bed at 1 -- Hard and bad day's work --

Cloudy but pleasant -- PM to Silver city -- walked some of it from the old Thompson

mill down about a mile -- Stopped in & saw J C Caldwell & his crippled imbecile daughter Bessie a short distance above the Devil's Gate -- Just below I was hailed by the widow of Dan Sohl [Dan B Sohl] who resides there with her 2 little children, boy & girl with her parents & had quite a pleasant chat for 20 minutes -- At Jack Long's saloon wrote up LM Barnaby for $2,000 -- At Silver I collected the $45 from W H Naileigh on his policy for $5,000 & delivered him his policy -- caught him as he came home from work, from the [Oest?] mine -- At 7 PM I started
From Downey Long Walk for me $44.40 remitted
back on foot -- walked 2 miles to Jack Long's & there got a ride on McGurn's grocery wagon to Va -- Jack gave me a bottle of catsup & a little jar of hoss radish -- Virginia at 9 -- got dinner at Otto's -- met Bill Foster and Tom Downey of Austin -- Ran with Downey an hour or so -- He is in looking about for a betterment -- Bed at 2 -- tired --
Thursday June 14
Same -- The Masonic Grand Lodge concluded this AM, & I saw the Austin men off on evening train, except Downey -- I rested today, being very tired -- Sent check for $44.40 to my Ins Co, also Jack Wyckoff's application -- Dr Manson today, refused to pass Barnaby -- too heavy a drinker -- so I did not submit the application -- Wrote a good two page letter to wife -- Evening at Degree Lodge -- Work in 1st & 2nd Deg --

Clear & pleasant -- PM rode to Gold hill on bus attending to insurance etc -- Walked home at 7 -- Bed 12 --
Saturday June 16
AM clear warm & pleasant -- I went nearly down to the Osbiston shaft lower end of Washington st to see Mike Kernan on life insurance -- no effect -- Took noon 'bus for Gold Hill, went down to Jack Long's -- Alfred Bennett came along in buggy & took me to Silver -- There I skirmished about on insurance & left for VA on foot at 6:30 -- stopped at Jack Longs, 2 miles, at 7:15 -- stopped 15 minutes in Gold Hill & arrived at Va at 9 -- about 2 hours travelling time -- 4 miles up hill -- About town a little, and bed at 1 -- tired

Cloudy, with occasional light showers of rain -- muddy -- I was about town some -- Rested after my weeks arduous labors -- The SF papers which came this morning brought news of the death of Oramel Evans from Paralysis or apoplexy -- He got me to write his obituary on the 13th of August last, expecting to die as he has done -- Have kept it ever since and this evening I completed it for publication -- Bed at 2
