"Happy New Year" 1889 Grand total eclipse of the Sun

Tuesday, January 1, 1889

Morning cloudy -- cleared off fine & clear by 10 AM -- Total eclipse of the sun about noon for about an hour -- This was the grand event of the day -- Almost total here -- only a little rim of 2 inch or so left of the sun -- It was badly obscured -- and one bright star was plainly visible in the sky (Venus) -- Very peculiar light at time of greatest obscurity, some like electric light -- Chickens got fooled & went to roost -- The eclipse totality was north of Reno -- belt of 90 miles width -- Winnemucca in the total belt -- Everybody out observing, with smoked glass, etc, ever the Piutes took particular interest -- Evening at Opera House -- Lydia Thompson &

her English Burlesque Company -- Big leg show, but not so good as the Rentz-Scantly Co in August last -- About 40 women -- Pretty good show & good house -- Bed 1 -- Coldest night yet -- 17 above zero --

Clear & pleasant -- About as usual -- Application rec'd of Jacob Baumann for $5,000 $3,000 for wife and $2,000 for his son -- about 5 yrs old -- Evening about town -- Bed at 12 --

Cloudy & cold -- PM at Gold Hill -- Crown Point office -- borrowed $100 from Sam Jones giving my note therefor -- payable one day after date -- Called on Jane Noble at her

Jane Nobel "Chip O' the old Block" Carson Parliament I get left

room at Mrs Fraser's -- She had bad cold, but recently recovered from a light touch of paralysis in one side of face and head, looking older than ever -- Footed it back to Va, paying some of my bills as I came -- Evening theater -- "Chip O' the Old Block" by a variety company -- Very amusing -- Good house -- Bed at 1 --

Saturday Jan 5

Clear & pleasant -- About town as usual -- left on the evening train for Carson -- Quite a lot of legislators and expectants on board. At 12:30 bed at Circe's Carson Exchange --

Sunday Jan 6

Same -- Did my best political skirmishing -- Evening at 7, caucus -- I got left -- Bed at 12:30 at Circe's, Carson Exchange --

In Carson Mrs Tufly's Funeral

Monday Jan 7

Same -- Went on morning train to Va -- diarrhea bad [partial erasure] Wrote up Caucus, etc for the Va Chronicle -- contracted to run the legislature for $15 per week -- Borrowed $10 of the office and left on the 3:25 train -- Loafed about

Same -- No session of the Legislature today on account of funeral of State Treasurer Tufly's wife -- Many from Va attended -- 85 carriages -- Evening I was at joint installation of Cuder Post GAR and The Womens Relief Corps -- Literary & musical exercised, banquet etc -- Bed at 1 --

In Carson Sister Rebecca Dead Railroad Pass Back to Virginia

Thursday Jan 10

Same -- In session again today -- Got duplicate key today to room of Dovey, State Supt of Pub Instruction, in State Capitol & have good place for doing my writing hereafter -- Wrote there last evening & this evening -- Got through at 10 -- went to Opera House & saw last act in "The World Against Her" by the Grismer-Davis Dramaric Co -- Very good house -- Bed 12:30

Friday Jan 11

Same -- Work as usual -- Succeeded in getting a pass from Yerington over the railroad, for the session -- Back to Virginia this evening -- At theater short time & saw last act of "Forgiven" by the Grismer-Davies Co -- Good house -- Bed at 1 -- Letter in Carson Post office today told the following, from the Memorial: [clipping; Death of Rebecca Talbot Doten]

Cloudy with light snow squalls -- About town -- Bed 1 -- This AM mail rec'd bound copy of "Production of gold and silver in the United States - 1887 - Kimball" -- 375 pages -- from the Director of the Mint, Washington -- It includes my report of the Comstock and my name is printed - "Alfred Doten" as the author of it --

Sunday Jan 13

Cloudy & cold with a few sprays of snow -- PM funeral of James Livingston, foreman of the Crown Point mine for some years past -- Took place from Gold Hill & came up here to Masonic burial ground -- Big funeral -- Masons and chosen Friends & Exempts on foot -- 86 carriages besides the hearse -- I walked with the Exempts -- He was a member -- Bed 1 --

AM snowing -- PM variable -- 2 inches snow here -- Left on morning train at 7:45 -- Carson as usual -- Skirmished about itemizing & reporting Legislature -- Home on evening train -- Wrote up letter nearly column for the Chronicle -- Bed at 3 --

Clear & cold, Went to Carson & back on train -- Have bad cold -- Evening wrote Chronicle letter -- Bed 2 -- cold 20 deg --

Cloudy & cold -- PM blustering, & evening snowy -- Morning train to Carson -- Reported as usual -- Evening train to VA -- snowing good -- Evening wrote up -- Bed at 2 -- He [John Black] was 68 years old, native of Alabama, & killed his brother Sam a year or two older on the 4th of May last -- Sleighs were out by 9 this evening -- The first sleighing of the season --

Clear & pleasant -- Lots of sleighs out -- about 7 inches of snow on the ground -- Went to Carson as usual -- Legislature adjourned till Monday -- I went to Reno -- Bed at 10 -- Very cold night --

Saturday Jan 19

Same -- Rose early -- Cal train about 4 hours late -- Wrote my Chronicle letter and at 11:10 left on train for Va, arriving at 2 PM. Sleighing still good, and most everything on runners -- got Jake Baumann's policy from the PO and in the evening
