126 Ginger Beer To 1 oz: of bruised ginger add 1 lb: of loaf Sugar, the thin rind of a Lemon & a Gallon of water, to be poured boiling hot over the other ingredients; cover down closely to keep in the steam: When quite cold; add the juice of one Lemon, & a table-spoonfull of Yeast: let stand 24 hours, strain, bottle, and closely cork down. The Beer will be ready for use in 3 days. N.B. Be careful to get the best Ginger, and slice or bruise it - that which is ground will not do. Put in stone bottles. Miss Barber

186. To extract the [L.E.?] of Roses

Gather Roses after [Sun Rising?] & lay the Flowers in a cucurbit [S.S.F.?] of Sea Salt & leaves beginning with a Layer of Salt till the cucurbit iis half full, press them down, & put in the [Helm?], [Seele?] it close, Stop the Nose of the [Helm?] & let it stand for 2 days.

The Salt in this Process, extracts the essential Oil by Fermentation, & after a few Days you may distill in MB.

You must throw away the first Distillation or Plegm, then [Seele?] the Receiver & the rest that comes [out] will be a double distilled Rose Water, with the essential Oil or [Otta?] so each in India which you will seperately turning the Reciever & the Water will come out first, & the

In The East they extract the essential Oil by putting the Rose Leaves in a Vessel without a Bottem [sic], with a Piece of Muslin tied over - Upon this [?] [?] Vessell they put an earthen Vessel with Ashes & [?] Coals upon them so as to drive the Moisture of the Rose Leaves [?] into the lower [?] when that step is finished the Olla will swim upon the Top of the water & may easily be seperated & the Rose water by this Process is excellent. 186. Incombustible Oil.

Rx. Castille Soap, shaved small [?] [?] [?] min the [A.S.]. with [?] [?] camphor [?] Mix them with [?] put them into a [?] or [?] well [?d] [?] in Horse Dung for [?] [?] [?] Then [?] Mix the [?] with Olive [?] [?] [?] again & you will have an Incombustible Oil to use in a Lamp.

2nd Process

Rx. [?] [?] [?] grind these well together, & mix with Petroleum to the Consistence of a Syrop - then [?] gently in [?] & reserve the Liquor,

3d Grind [?] with aa of the [?] of the 1st process. Mix this with [?] & [?] &

181 [?] with 3 Cohobabeans upon fresh [?] & [?] trying each [?] with the Candle if it will burn if not it is incombustible & you may use it with the foll. [Mixture?] Rx. Amianthus, wch being poison ous, take Care not to inhale the Vapour & make Matches of it for the above [?] You may also use Pith of Elder. wch must be renewed every 24 hours

Curious Experiment Put into a clean earthen Pipkin Red [?] [?] with 1/2 Pint of [?] boil them doe [?] Then add [?] [?] & [?] [?] of shavings of Goats horn in [?] boil [?] add a quart of [?] boil 12 minutes. Add Lamp or Ivory Black [?] boil till the whole is thick. Dip an [?] nail into this composition if it sticks draw it out of

188 Rose Pomatum Mr Perkins of Lymington

Put 6, 8, 10 or 12 [?] of good Pork Lard into a large earthen Pan. Beat in as many fresh Rose leaves as you can procure every day for 10 or 12 days with the [?], put in the 1st day of common salt [?]. after standing 12 days, put the Pan in a large kettle or Copper of Water & let it simmer for 5 or 6 Hours. then strain the Liquid thro a Cloth squeezing it from the Leaves into a large Pan - when Cold take out the Pomatum & thro away any Liquid that remains, & warm that as nefore repeating it till no more liquid remains - Let it stand 5 or 6 [?] before you use it.

Gather on St. Bartholomews Day Cabbage & root of Southernwood or Abrotanum & fasten it upon your Body under your Shirt so as to touch the Skin & you will neither sweat not feel any Fatigue in Running Or put Poplar Leaves at the Bottom of your Feet, between the Stocking &

Plan an onion near a Rose Bush and the Roses will have an excellent Smell, & the Water distilled from them will be much better than the Common.

192 To send a Letter in an Egg: not to be discovered

This is useful in War. Write upon the Outside of the Shell with Ink made of Gall Nuts - Alleum & Vinegar. Then lay the Egg, when dry, for 3 of 4 Days in strong [alchemy symbol] dry it again & then send it by your messenger, with a letter of no Consequence if interrupted. When

186 He arrives at his Journey's end & when the Egg is carefully opened the writing will appear upon the white of the Egg. Or. Write upon an Egg as before with the same Ink, seeth it in Salt [alchemy symbol water] for [?] till the Writing disappears. Then send away the Egg & the Writing will appear upon the White when the Shell is carefully broken. Or, Lay a new Egg in strong [alchemy symbol] till the Shell is soft, then cut a long slit with a lancet, & put a letter into the Egg & it will be as hard as ever when laid again into [alchemy symbol]. The slit must be covered with Chalk or Wax - but it will always be seen, there for the first method is the best.
