The Gulf Weed. [underline] [furus natans?] [end underline]

Some specimens of which I [procured?] (Sargassum bacifernum)
The vessel seemed to go throuigh extensive [fields?] of it and
by what I could make out it appeared to be moving in
a northward direction. a large body of water called
the [['Gulf Stream']] enters the [[Atlantic]] round [[Florida]] and
the water is of a high temperature and retains an amount
of warmth beyond the ordinary temperature of the [[Atlantic
ocean]] for a great distance northwards. This stream
has enormous quantities of the Gulf weed floating
in it and sufficient to very much [retard?] the
[hugeness?] of a vessel whilst sailing through it.
Whether the shores or shallow water of the [[Mexican
Gulf]] produce the weed or whether it grows in the
depths of the ocean I never learnt a merciful and
wise providence without a doubt, has thus ordered its
wide distribution for we know that it bears with
it innumerable small animals affording food and
sustenance to fish and fowl in its track.

I am no botanist and cannot describe the specimen
I [procured?] but the above names will facilitate
the finding the plant in a botanical work.
