The Fire-Fly.

A curious little beetle [underline] [elaten?] [noctilicus?] [end underline], harmless,
but having the power to emit a spark-like light
on a dark night. I never happened to come across
them very numerous, but I watched the little fiery
sparks [flitting?] and darking hither and thither on
a dark night with much interest and wondering
what particular object they had in view, probably
looking for their "sweethearts and wives." a close hot
day with a storm afterwards with rain, and a cloudy
evening, will bring out the little active, [flitting?],
[torchbearers?]; and in the dark hundreds of fiery
sparks will be darting about, emitting almost light
enough to read by

There are many others of the same species
having the power of showing a brilliant light.
