The following statement relates to a quantity taken to Beverley - I am not yet prepared to bring under your notice the quantity brought to this Town. The under-mentioned quantities were sold by the parties named to Mr Wm Smith of Brandes Burton ______________________________ [?] ____________________________________ 7. 3. 5 Being at the rate of 4/- per stone of 14 lbs which on inquiry we find to be a fair dealing price for damaged Tallow. Mr Smith occupies a couple of fields at Brandes Burton and, as his father did before him, carries on the business of purchasing de[?]ceased & dead animals of all sorts which he skins, and extracts the fat therefrom. The skins he sells to Tanners, the fat to Tallow chandlers The Tallow above mentioned he took to Beverley and sold to Mr Frederick John Yates, Tallow chandler, who weighed it [?] 7. 3. 14 and paid him £15. 15. 0 being at the rate of 40/ per cart which is a fair price, many stones adhering thereto. As soon as the circumstances came to my knowledge, I dispatched two Officers to seize the same, when, on preceeding to the premises of Mr Yates, it was found from its offensive state to have been melted down with Tallow of a superior quality, but Mr Yates immediately exhibited his Day Book, & pointed out the entry of the purchase, and as the |
