reduced his legacies to his children & grandchildren so as to, take of great Part of a very Heavy Burden which he had before laid on his Executors and this Charles Carter and I who are his Executors & residuary legacies have reason to think a very wise caution from the bad Accounts of bad Debts returned to use by our Merchants since his Death and from the many deficiences of disappointments which we have met with here. Amongst the rest a Legacy of three thousand pounds Bank stock reduced to fifteen hundred Pounds carries with it some Ambiguity & it is doubted whether my Father intended to give my Brother George Carter fifteen Hundred Pounds Bank stock of fifteen Hundred Pounds Sterling. The Executors look on the last construction as the most agreeable to the Intention of the Testators, so particularly exprest in the Preamble of the codicil; & George Carter on the other hand is as much satisfied that the first ought to be prefer'd.
