To Mr. Edw. Athawes, Mercht. of London

Shirley Augst. the 1st. 1738.

Sir,

This is Just to advise of some Bills of
Exchange I have drawn on you; one yesterday to William
Prentis for L g"13"1. Another this day [illegible] Thomas Lord
Fairfax for .119"15"6.

L 129"8"7

amounting to one hundred & twenty nine pounds, eight
shillings & seven pence Sterling, which I desire You to
Pay and place to account of my Nephew Robert Canter's
Estate. I am sorry I am oblidged to draw on You; but
it was absolutely necessary: the First of there Bills is
for my Nephew's Board & Schooling at the Colledge, the
other is for two years [Quitrents?] of his Lands. these
[Quitrents?] are A Great annual charge to his Estate, without
a Farthing profit arising from almost all his Back
lands, which are about twenty eight thousand acres,
Which Lie almost intirely useless and uncultivated; but
during his Infancy they Cannot be sold: I will therefore
Endeavour to make the Burthen lighter by Leaving
them out to Tenants, as fast as I can, but 'till that can
be done, this intolerable charge can no way be avoided,
which will be about fifty nine pounds Ster. (Sterling) annually

I have also this day drawn on you to
Thomas Lord Forfax for L54"19"8

to discharge two years [Quitrents?] of my Brother George
Carter's Northern Neck Lands. He also labours under the
same inconvenience as my Nephew, and has writ to My
Brother Charles & me to sell his Back Lands. If he will
send me A power of Attourney to this end, leaving the
value to be settled by Colonel John Grimes, I will end Endeavor
to do Something on it.

I am,

Sir,

Your most humble Servant,

John Carter.
