The Fuel Question.

Among one of the many reasons that could be ad-
vanced why efforts are being made to attract the at-
tention of capitalists and citizens of our city to the
question of FUEL, is the vast amount of money an-
nually paid in this city for wood and coal to States
outside of Illinois.

The following statements of the value of wood and
coal imported into Chicago, are made up to the 31st
of March of each year, and will doubtless surprise
many who may peruse them:

In 1862 — for Coal, . . . $825,000
" — for Wood, . . . 458,000
$1,283,000

In 1863-4 — for Coal, . . . $924,000
" — for Wood, . . . 583,000
$1,507,000

In 1864-5 — for Coal, . . . $1,536,000
" — for Wood, . . . 1,405,000
$2,941,000
