Dear Mr. Jax:

I was so glad to be able to keynote Black Is Beautiful for you; I came away very enthusiastic about the whole project, and I'm sure it will be very successful. It is only through programs like yours, where people are asked not just to feel concerned, but to be concerned and to show it, that we can expect to make anything but false progress.

Gene, would you do me a favor, please? You remember the bush I liked so much at St. John Claver, and I brought a branch home with me from it? Well, the branch died before I ever got it home, and I've forgotten what it was called. Would you please ask the priest at St. John Claver what kind of bush it is, and let me know?

Thank you for your time, and, again, I wish you every success with Black Is Beautiful.

Sincerely,

VEL R. PHILLIPS
Alderman, 6th Ward
