Office of the Light House
Engineer
Thirteenth District

Portland, Oregon
Feb 14th, 1873

Chairman Light House
Board
Washington D. C.

Sir:
I have the honor to
acknowledge the
receipt of your
communication dated
Jane 29th in regard to
location of the
Fowlweather Light.

I think the cause of the
difference of opinion as
to the location of this
light must have arisen
from a confounding
of Cape Fowlweather
& Yaquinna Point.

Yaquina L. H. is situated
in the North shore of
Yaquina Bay. Cape
Fowlweather L.H. " " "
"Yaquinna Point"
according to Prof
Davidson & The Coast
Pilot ; or on "Cape
Fowlweather" according
to Col Williamson and
also the C.S. Charles as
stated in next to last
telegraph of page 128 of
Coast Pilot for Oregon.
This point was the one
known as Cape
Fowlweather by the
people,so named on
charts & maps, stated
by Col Williamson as
the site of the
Fowlweather Light, &
was certainly the point
intended when the
Government Reservation
was declared. It is
3 3/8 miles to the
Northward of the
Yaquina Light & about 9
miles south of Prof
Davidson's Cape
Fowlweather. He is
doubtless right (See
page 133, Coast Pilot
for Oregon) but the
change causes
confusion.

Your obedient servant
