This agreement made this 1st day September 1864. between
McRae & Gardner Coal Masters of Shelby County Alabama;
and the Selma Iron Works Company a body Corporate by
its President Henry H Ware of Selma Alabama; Witnesseth
That for and in consideration of the payments herein=after
mentioned, the said McRae & Gardner agree to deliver to the
said Selma Iron Company on the platform of the Alabama
& Tenn Rivers Railroad at Montevallo in Shelby County aforesaid
(1800) One Thousand Eight Hundred Tons of Coal and (360)
Three Hundred & Sixty Tons Coke of (2000lbs) Two Thousand pounds
per Ton. Said Coal & Coke being from the seam of Coal now
worked by the said McRae & Gardner nine miles North West
of Montevallo aforesaid. The Coal shall be well screened
and free from Slate & Dirt, and the Coke well burnt,
Said deliveries of Coal & Coke to be made at the rate
of One Hundred and Fifty Tons of Coal and Thirty Tons
Coke monthly. Also the said McRae & Gardner agree to load
the said Coal & Coke, at the yard rates per Month, on the
Cars of the said Alabama and Tenn Railroad, or on any
other Cars the said Selma Iron Company may send them.
But it is hereby understood, that if the said Iron Company
do not furnish Cars in sufficient number to take the said
quantity of Coal & Coke to be delivered monthly; then & in that
case it shall pay the said McRae & Gardner for the whole so
delivery. The quantity whereof shall be ascertained by admission[?]
taking 38 feet Coke for a Ton of Coal, and 60 feet Coke for
