Penetanguishene 27th April 1844

Dear Brother

I have the pleasure to acknowledge the recept of your letter dated Kingston 18th April you wish me to send you a statement of your Chieftain ship - I sit down at this moment to give you a very correct account = (Namance , Sturgeon) which gave your Father (Kaskiningi, Cut finger) his Chiftain[Chieftain] ship and gave him a river called (nago cibi, Sandy river) your father took possission[possession] of that river - another Cheif[Chief] (Annimikener, Thunder) come forward and told your Father I cant attend to both side of River St. Clair I give you this side) British English side) here I put this wampum belt in your nick[neck] this land will be yours and your Children from one Generation to another - now no person can dispute your rights of that part of the Contry[Country], this Chieftain ship of yours at present comes from your Great Grandfather I dont se[see] that a few strgglers[stragglers] that as[have] sold their lands to the Americans is coming forward to Claim your property - if they don't believe this let them go at [???] of our nation and enquire of the otawie Great Chiefs them is the persons to Settled every thing concerning our Chieftain ship, and then they will find out the truth -

Saugeeng[Saugeen] August 20th 1844

Dear Brother

These few lines are to tell you all about our fishing affairs, as it will now soon commence. for by the middle of Next month it will be time to get on the spot and want to inform you, with what I shall expect you here with, that is a seine Barrells and salt and if you have the means of getting some provisions to sell here exchange for fish you might some profit by it, and I want you to get your best friend from among the owners of a vessel to come here with you, so that you and I can place some faith or confidence in, for as we well know how poor and helpless we are in transacting our affairs with white folks, we much need try to get hold of some we would honest, also try to get some net twine for would like to have some and some Leather also.

be very particular for a seine for we are not sure of getting one ourselves yet, as we expect you with a vessele[vessel] tell your Captain to bring some apples and other rations that he would sell for fish and s. also some hooks and lines for Trout is also plenty at sometime. nothing more only we shall be on the lookout for your arrival here if come sooner than the time I mention it will be better for the Herring is now commencing in some places, all our friends around are well here and we wish you all the same blessing
