Port [Sarnia?] 17th February [1838?]. [1858?]

Sir

I have considered the answers of the Supt. General to the questions put to you by me regarding my position, location & what advantages would be entitled me by accepting the offer empowered by the act of last session, and being dissatisfied on some points of the evident intention of the Department it becomes necessary to write you again on the subject.

1st. I am perfectly satisfied with the assurance of the Department that I would be entittled [entitled] to the Capital of my share of the Annuity, and of the yearly interest arrising [arising] from the land sales, also the additional annual payment of $300. secured to me by the provisional Agreement at the time of the late surrender.

2nd [But?] I am dissatisfied to perceive that the Dept. is unwilling that I should have that portion of the reserve which I occupy secured to me permanently on account as I suppose that you think I would be on [in] the way of the whites in extending their Town southward. It may not be amiss to tell you at once that I have no desire to retard the progress of the Town in any way whatever but rather have an [interest?] in it. Still I want to retain my lot [but] [crossed out] and [written above] have [it] [crossed out] my [written above] rights secured in such a way that I would have full power to comply with the demands of it when it is actually required and this I am fully convinced would satisfy all parties. And as to my band they are perfectly willing that this lot apportioned to me should be secured (to me) providing I do not get anymore land after that is done or [settlled] [settled], being born & raised here on the spot I do not see why the the Government should be [so] [crossed out] indifferent to my [intelligible crossed out word: past? &] undisputed claims & rights.

3rd Being so fond of the society of the white people I have chosen to remain [near the Town or upon?] [all crossed out] [upon?] my present location & will never think of [removing?] to any other place, and I humbly request that the Department will forthwith make [such?] [crossed out] arrangements that will put [an such of all uneasiness?] [all crossed out] me all right [written above] so that I [will?] [crossed out] shall feel [that] [crossed out] [my?] rights are respected & [still?] recognized as it should be. and I trust sympathy will also be [shown?] [crossed out] manifested towards my poor family.

4th I have no particular objection [that?] I should be restricted in the quantity of land that I would get providing I do not get too small a quantity. I would accept 35 acres which would be a good deal less than what the rest of the [Indians?] are to get and less than what I should have by right.

5th I shall not decide to take advantage of the Act untill [until] steps are taken by the Department that [might?] enable me to become free & independent [illegible words crossed out] -- [Lastly?] I am [requested] [crossed out] ordered [written above] to state that my Brother William is in the same position as I am, & [desires?] [and?] asks to be favored with same previleges [privileges] that I am asking for myself. Also that of [my?] father who is now aged & [infirm?] expects [that?] justice he is [entitled?] to, be done him regarding his property

I am Sir Your ob [obedient] & [humble? Servant?] David B Wawanosh [Head?] Chief

[Port?] Sarnia 29th March 1858-

Dear Sir

We the Chiefs and [youngmen?] of the Chippeways residing on the St Clair [Mission?] have assembled in full Council on the 10th [rilt?] [in?] which we have[unanimously?] agreed to petition to the Conference for a change in our [Mission?]. Our present beloved Pastor the Revd S Waldron who has been very useful amongst us in times past is now somewhat [advanced?] in years. We are desirous of having a younger man, and one of active powers and influence to reside among us, we therefore humbly ask that the subject may be taken [thereon as may be deemed most for the advancement] [all crossed out] into consideration at the next Meeting of the annual Conference and such action taken thereon as may be deemed most for the [advancement?] of the spiritual edification of our people. Should our petition be favorably entertained by that body. We [earnestly?] request that the Revd William [Scott?], be sent to this [Mission?] and depend upon, he would be very agreeable to us all.

And we have no hesitation in expressing opinion that if Mr Scott is sent again among the Indians he would be of great service, and would be the most suitable person to defend the Indians of this County at large & may by his instrumentality obtain facilities for improvement in our present condition, and we hope the Great Men of your Conference will see the propriety and necessity of restoring him to the Indian work.

We are Revd Sir

Your Indian Brothers

Signed in [on] behalf of the Council
