Biographical Note: Both the McFarland and the Russell families have their roots in early East Texas. In 1871, the two families came together with the marriage of Robert Everett Russell (b. Oct. 10, 1847, d. May 24, 1922) and Catherine Christine McFarland (b. July 2, 1849, d. Oct. 17, 1888), the daughter of Thomas S. McFarland. Description: From Robert Russell (Orange, Texas) to Kate McFarland (Bleakwood, Texas). Robert writes to Kate about a recent fishing trip, friends, and family. He has sent some medicine to her mother. He writes about an upcoming sailing trip he is making on the Schooner Tom & Able (?). Robert writes that even though Orange is not the best place he plans on risking his chances. He reassures Kate that he enjoyes reading and answering her letters and no entertainment will keep him from doing so. He has plans to build a new house because he cannot rent the current house which is in bad condition.
