Dunbar Grabs State Title

HOUSTON - Dunbar High
School's mens doubles and sin-
gles tennis team walked away
with top honors in the state
championship playoffs held at
Prairie View College Saturday,
April 30.

The team of Phillip Jones and
James E. Cox were victorious
over Seguin in the doubles cham-
pionship. In first round play the
Tigers downed Sherman and
then turned back to LaMarque to
gain entrance to the finals.

Jones turned back Sherman
in the singles championship by
6-1, 7-5, 6-2 scores. In earlier
rounds he downed Galena Park,
6-3, 6-1 after drawing a first
round bye.

Polly Holeman placed second
in the baseball throw and fourth
in discus in the track and field
events. Hollis Walton, a four
year letterman in basketball,
football and track, placed sec-
ond in high jumping.

In literary events, Bettye Lew-
is a senior, placed third in de-
claiming.

By virtue of their victories,
Jones and Cox will participate
in the National Scholastic Tour-
nament to be staged at Durham;
North Carolina on May 13-14.

Jones is a graduating honor
student and plans to attend col-
lege on a scholarship.
